Terrell State Hospital

CCA provided landscape architecture design and construction documentation for this $450 million, 22-acre healthcare facility, including hardscape and softscape design for seven secure courtyards. The courtyards incorporate site furnishings, gaming and sports equipment, and carefully vetted plant materials selected for safety, durability, and therapeutic value. CCA also designed the entry landscapes and coordinated with the City on tree mitigation efforts. The landscape construction value totaled $10 million.

The 415,500-square-foot, 250-bed facility replaces a 139-year-old psychiatric hospital and delivers state-of-the-art therapeutic environments for both adult and adolescent patients. The program includes 25 civil commitment beds, 50 maximum-security beds, 140 non-maximum-security beds, and 35 adolescent beds. Designed to support evidence-based treatment, the facility features private patient rooms that balance privacy and security, shared activity spaces that encourage social interaction, and secure outdoor areas for gardening and recreation. Abundant natural light, outdoor courtyards, and integrated clinical support spaces promote recovery and overall well-being, while a dedicated parking garage accommodates staff and visitors.
